Safety & planning

Confidence before you come aboard.

New to boating on the coast? Canadian passenger-vessel rules cover personal flotation, safety briefings and emergency equipment. Here are the essentials to know before your outing.

Lifejackets for your group

Lifejackets are included with your outing. Canadian rules require appropriately sized, approved flotation equipment for everyone aboard. Tell us in advance if children are joining so we can discuss sizing.

A briefing before departure

Passenger-vessel operators must explain how to put on lifejackets, where safety equipment is located and how to move safely around the boat. Listen to your captain’s instructions and ask if anything is unfamiliar.

Equipment for emergencies

Canadian requirements cover a first-aid kit, fire extinguishers and distress-signalling equipment. The exact equipment depends on the vessel and voyage; the safety briefing explains what guests need to know.

Tell us about walking or boarding needs before your visit so we can discuss suitability and the facilities on your assigned vessel.

Meet Your Captains

Local Knowledge. Lifelong Experience. Unforgettable Adventures.

Craig and Matt share a lifelong love of fishing, the ocean and the Pacific Northwest. Their different backgrounds bring local knowledge and a personal touch to every fishing charter, wildlife outing and Catch & Cook experience.

Captain Craig Summers

Captain Craig Summers

Owner | Coastal Smokehouse Catch & Cook Tours

Craig began fishing near Juneau, Alaska, at eight years old. That childhood passion grew into a lifetime of fishing across Alaska, British Columbia, Washington and Oregon. An avid fisherman, hunter and outdoorsman, he enjoys sharing the places and experiences that have shaped his life.

More about Craig

His educational background in marine biology and maritime safety complements his practical experience on the water. Ashore, Craig owns Rupert Meats and Rupert Meats Coastal Smokehouse in Prince Rupert, including a licensed sport fish processing facility. He knows the journey from catching a fish to preparing it for the table.

That connection between fishing and food inspired Coastal Smokehouse Catch & Cook Tours: coastal adventures followed by freshly caught seafood professionally prepared at the Coastal Smokehouse.

Craig’s philosophy is simple: Great adventures, great people, and great food make unforgettable memories.

Captain Matt McEwen

Captain Matt McEwen

Professional Fishing Guide | River & Ocean Charter Captain

For Matt, fishing is more than a passion. It’s a way of life. He has spent years guiding at fishing lodges throughout Northern British Columbia, helping anglers pursue steelhead and other prized freshwater species.

More about Matt

His river-guiding background and experience as an ocean captain span Northern BC’s challenging rivers and the fishing grounds around Prince Rupert. He brings patience, practical knowledge and a love of the outdoors to every charter.

Matt enjoys helping experienced anglers refine their techniques and introducing first-time guests to fishing. Sharing that knowledge and making the day enjoyable are central to his approach.

For Matt, the greatest reward isn’t just landing a trophy fish. It’s sharing the experience with the people aboard.

More Than Just a Fishing Charter

Together, Craig and Matt combine freshwater and ocean guiding, knowledge of the marine environment and a connection to the North Coast’s food traditions. Whether you come for fishing, wildlife, scenery or a freshly caught meal, their goal is a safe, personal adventure and stories worth taking home.

Come as guests. Leave with memories.
